Taxes should be increased, says Clarke

Income tax payers may have to be hit with greater tax liabilities, an ex-Cabinet member has asserted.

According to former home secretary Charles Clarke, raising taxes could be a good way of addressing the UK's fiscal deficit.

The Labour MP claimed that any political party that fails to include tax rises in their election manifesto could be perceived to be deceiving voters.

"People are looking for a degree of honesty," he told the Independent.

"We need to talk about tax and spending, not just cuts, to reduce the deficit."

However, Mr Clarke agreed that prime minister Gordon Brown did the right thing by delaying action on reducing the deficit until next year.

He proposed that some of the tax rises could include charges for some public services and road tolls.

Meanwhile, prime minister Gordon Brown has defended the actions his government took throughout the global financial crisis.

He told the Guardian that people are now beginning to accept that the decisions it took were the right ones to help Britain through the recession.
