'Fierce' competition for IT contractor jobs in Ireland

People who are looking for opportunities to work abroad face 'fierce' competition if they are considering Ireland as an option, it has been stated.

Working as a contractor in Ireland is a particularly tough sector to break into, according to one unemployed software engineer.

Tony Winters, 25, said that he has missed a payment for his student loan as he is unable to find employment.

Speaking to the BBC, he commented: "A few years ago there might be 20 people going for the same job, but now it's literally hundreds."

Mr Winters, who has a master's degree from University College Dublin, said he had only had two interviews in four months.

He explained that when he left education in 2008, people were able to take their pick of jobs.

This comes after Taoiseach Brian Cowen met with US businesses to try to establish trade links between Ireland and America.

It is hoped the firms will create opportunities for professionals to find work contracting in Ireland as a result of the talks.ADNFCR-2852-ID-19677261-ADNFCR
